ArmA 2 and Team Fortress 2 Free to Play!

Two of the biggest hits this decade are now Free to Play! Head on over to ArmA 2 Free to grab your copy of ArmA 2 Free, and if you have a steam account, you are now entitled to install Team Fortress 2 free of charge! Don't worry if you don't have a steam account though. It's free to register and download Steam. You'll be playing in no time!

Now free!

ArmA 2 Free comes with all the military-simulation goodness that the paid version has, with full multiplayer support, and not to mention the fantastically fun scenario editor. What's the catch? There's no singleplayer campaign, the graphics quality is a little more limited, and there's no mod support. But why complain? It's free!

So what about TF2? Well, it seems like Valve are making so much money through the Mann Co. Store alone that they figure, "Hell, let's just GIVE TF2 away". Like most F2P games nowadays, the in-game Mann Co. Store offers a whole multitude of micropurchases, which is where the real money rolls into Valve. But really, that's it! You're at no disadvantage from players who bought the game years ago (except for perhaps skill and experience), and there are maybe a couple of item drops that you will be unable to get (players who paid for the game have been awarded a unique hat since the F2P update). Otherwise, you have the same chance of getting random item drops as any other player, and the same access to the store content. No catches! So what are you waiting for? Get in on the action now!*

*coaching and tutorials are available in-game for players new to the TF2 universe, so don't be scared!

Is This the Future of Gaming?

Gaikai - The Web based Video Game Launcher

"Dammit I wish I could play that new Crysis 2 game on my toaster of a laptop..."

"... what if you could?"

Gaikai - The Web based Video Game Launcher

Could this lead to the future of gaming?

This must have cropped up in conversation amongst many a gamer and developer. Can you imagine being able to play F.E.A.R. 3 (or is it spelt F3AR - I can never decide) on an IBM Thinkpad? Well one man has managed to make this a very close reality and his name is David Perry.

Along with Rui Pereira and Andrew Gault, David has put together one of the most interesting ideas for a web application for gamers all around the world to get excited about.

Started in 2008 Gaikai has managed to build a web site that allows you to play almost any type of game (even using examples of a Nintendo 64 version of Mario Kart) through your web browser, no installations, no plugins, just your browser.

Currently available for Beta testing (for those who are geographically close enough to a host machine) it is all done using streaming video and a highly efficient compression system that allows you to control the game as if you were at the host machine itself with apparently no ill effects.

Take a look, do you think this could be the answer for gamers with computers that can't run the most up to date and demanding games on their low-spec machines?

Leave us your opinion.
